Volunteer Application Volunteer Opportunities

All positions may be available Monday through Friday and training is provided.

Dock Assistance
Volunteer assistance is needed in the loading dock area of the Meals on Wheels office to coordinate delivery bags for driver and volunteer pick up. This person is responsible for counting both hot and cold food items in all delivery bags and staging them appropriately for pickup before they leave the dock. Essential hours are 8:30 am to 10:30 am.

Administrative Assistance
This volunteer opportunity available from 11am to 1pm will assist in answering phone calls primarily from volunteers during delivery, and assisting in answering questions of volunteers and contacting clients who have not answered the door. Additional duties may include data entry, making copies and similar office duties.

Meals on Wheels Staff Substitute Drivers
Volunteer assistance is needed on an “on call” basis or on a regular schedule for the delivery of bulk food to our dining centers and/or delivery bags for volunteer pickup. Route times vary and may include the provision of a Meals on Wheels van or call for the volunteer to use a personal vehicle.

Substitute Dining Center Managers
Volunteer your time on an “on call” basis as a substitute at a Meals on Wheels Congregate dining center serving lunch to individuals over the age of 60. This position may include dispensing prepackaged meals to participants or may entail serving lunch on trays in a dining room setting. Set up, serving of meals, minimal paperwork and clean up may be required. Hours are generally 10am to 1pm but do vary depending on location.

Meal Delivery Drivers
Meal delivery occurs Monday through Friday. There are six (6) meal pick-up locations throughout Topeka for the convenience of our customers and volunteers:

  • Walmart Neighborhood Market – South parking lot | 335 SW MacVicar Ave
  • Meals on Wheels | 2134 SW Westport Dr
  • Papan’s Landing Senior Center | 619 NW Paramore Street
  • Lulac Senior Center | 1502 NE Seward Avenue
  • Highland Park United Methodist Church | 2914 SE Michigan Avenue
  • East Topeka Senior Center/Rice Community Center | 432 SE Norwood

Meal delivery bags are picked up between 10:45 am and 11:30 am depending on the pick-up location and delivered in that area. Routes take up to an hour to deliver to an average of 14 clients per route. Flexibility in scheduling is available to all volunteers to include:

  • Corporate Volunteers
  • Retired Volunteers
  • Families
  • Students

Substitute Drivers
Meals on Wheels is always in need of qualified volunteers who are willing to substitute for absent full-time volunteers. Substitutes can stipulate what days they are available to work as well as the areas of delivery that work best for them.
